Whilst Augur Accountants focuses on helping business leaders navigate the challenges and pressures of various phases of business - we also recognise and support the needs of the wider community including the third sector.

Recently, I had the opportunity to help a local charity who had been operating for 3 years, by carrying out their Independent Examination.

An Independent Examination is required by Charities with turnover of more than £25,000 and up to a turnover of £1m or £250k where the Charity has assets over £3.26m. Charities that exceed this limit must be audited.

As a Fellow of the AIA (UK), I am able to conduct Independent Examinations for all eligible charities and did so on this occasion pro bono.

What struck me is the amount of hard work and passion I experienced from the charity's volunteers & staff as they work to make lives better for people experiencing all manner of difficulties.

It was great to see how a local charity had started to grow by helping people across the UK and how they had evolved to create an ongoing funding stream from integrating with (in this case) Heath Services & Professionals.

Whilst it's often difficult to juggle the pressures of owning a business, caring for children or parents and finding some time to relax, unwind or learn something new - it's rewarding to think of ways where you can combine some of these to help a charity.

Whether it's donating some time to help on the front line, helping in an administrative capacity or even rasing funds or making a small financial contribution - all of these really help to keep charities supporting those who need it most in our society.
